I just purchased the baseline M1 MacBook Air and I’m having trouble with the screensaver taking over the computer. It will come on even while using the device and then there’s no way to dismiss the screensaver. I have to switch users, log out, and/or restart the machine to get the screensaver to go away. At this point I’ve disabled the screensaver (which for me is fine) but I’m hoping there’s a fix out there somewhere.

"Configure the screen saver to not be displayed on the login window, which will also prevent the screen saver from starting 20 minutes after clicking on Login Window… or Switch User. This can be done by logging in as an admin user and entering the following command into Terminal: sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.screensaver loginWindowIdleTime 0 When the Password: prompt appears, type the password of the user that is currently logged in and press Return (the password being typed at this prompt will not be displayed)."
Hi there, that doesn't make sense, as it fixed my and a few other people's after 11.2 update
Same issue here. All user accounts this happens with and all have the Screensaver options set to none. I have reinstalled the OS and it still is occurring.
Put off buying a replacement MBA until the M1 was available. Now wishing I hadn’t bothered. It is driving us insane.
Also chiming in here- brand new MacBook Air M1- have had this issue since I took it out of the box. Basically, in the middle of typing the screen saver will randomly turn on and essentially brick the computer. Happens on both my profile and my wife's profile.
I have exactly the same problem!!!! And staff said that there's no problem with the hardware after checking. But I have purchased for 5 Days only. No way to solve the problem. The only thing I can do is to close the lid and open it again!!!! I cannot accept that for a new computer.
In response to cyrille2021 re it being potentially linked to having multiple accounts active: this doesn't seem to be the cause. The bug happens even with only one account logged in (I migrated 4 accounts to a new MBAir M1, but have only used 1 and the bug happens... first day of use, occurred while actively typing... (MBAir, BigSur 11.1, MacBookAir10,1 Apple M1, 8 (4 performance and 4 efficiency), System Firmware Version: 6723.61.3
Same here, but even if you disable the screensaver it happens.
It also happens with 1 or 2 users logged in.
Hope they will fix soon since it's impossible to work like this.
I'm working from 3 hrs. now and it happend like 5 or 6 times. Not accettable.
The pseudo solutions of locking the screen and unlocking again until the glitch goes away don't cut it. I've bought a brand new computer and I need to get work done, not waste my time playing "guess-the-glitch-fix".
Apple should come out, acknowledge the issue, and offer a time estimate for a solution.
I haven't had the screen saver issue yet but I have the issue of not being able to wake the screen up after sleep. Closing the lid and reopening fixes this problem as well, I think the screen saver issue, and the external displays not waking are all related to the same bug, lets hope 11.2 fixes all of these.
I can confirm that this was the advice provided to me by Apple support and I am yet to see a recurrence of the issue. Note that I always use the quick switch option in the menu bar to change users. Needless to say, until such time that an actual fix is released we will not be enabling a screensaver!
Something like dis happened to me before, BUT on macOS Catalina when I would rest my finger on the Touch ID sensor at the same frame it went into screen saver and it was STUCK there, but when I did Command + Control + Q, It actually sent me to the lock screen as normal, but when I put my password in, it sent me back into the screensaver and It was STILL STUCK there, I had to reopen the computer to get it to start actually working again!
dis is an Intel i3 MacBook Air 2020 it overheats and is overall not as efficient as the M1 MacBook Pro

Yeah, I have this issue as well of late with my 13" MBP M1.
It started 2 days ago, I've owned this laptop for about a month without this issue.
Right now, only doing a switch user and logging back in helps me. It's frustrating because I can't pinpoint why this happened. No steps to retrace new software/apps or any other changes.
This thread started back in November and today is 14 January. We can put a man on the moon but Apple can't fix a screensaver related issue in two months. Not to mention running a 2nd display extended. Impressive
That’s not a fix. It’s a workaround to get it going again, but that doesn’t prevent it from happening again. Also, your “solution” doesn’t always work, and has never worked for me. I have to press the Touch ID button and login again.
Just here to say I have this same issue and getting ready to return my MB 2020 m1 8core cpu if its not fixed soon. I just got this $1200 computer to have this issues is bad and needs to be addressed quick.
Same here... First I had another issue that often some apps (or even the Mac) crashed when my MacBook Air M1 came out of sleep. I contact support several times about this. Eventually they asked me to reinstall the complete OS. The sleep issue is still there but now I also have that screensaver issue you are describing here (several times per day)...

I was an early adaptor of the M1 and was under the assumption those issues would be fixed in an update but we are now 11.2.1 and it seems to get worse instead of better....
PLEASE APPLE, FIX THIS. THIS IS SO ANNOYING.
