Updating Pages documents based on changes to existing template?

If I create a Pages document based on a template, for example, a custom Notes template, then later make changes to that template, is it possible to update the document(s) to reflect those changes to the updated template?

Also, is it even possible to update a template? When I wanted to make changes to a custom template, I've been saving it as a new one and deleting the old one. Is there a better way to update templates?

"is it possible to update the document(s) to reflect those changes to the updated template?"

Only by editing the document directly, or by recreating it using the modified template.

Not that I'm aware of. You create a template by creating a document and saving the document as a template. The saved template is a 'custom' template, and does not dirctly replace any other template, supplied or custom.

If you are changing all occurrences of a single style in the older document to a single style defined in the new template, your easiest process might be to edit each 'old' style to match the corresponding 'new' style. The end effect should be conversion of each block of text initially set to an 'old' style to now be displayed wearing the 'new' style.

I've not done enough with Styles to provide a more specific answer, so I would suggest making a copy of the 'old' document, and doing some experimenting.

What do you mean by editing the document directly? Could you elaborate on this?

If I update a template and go back to a document that used the old template, it would keep the old style/formatting. Conversely, if I create a new document based on the new template and copy/paste everything from the old document, it retains all of the old style/formatting and I have to update everything manually within the document.

In both of your suggestions (editing doc directly & recreating using new template), do you mean that I would have to manually change the style/formatting within the document as opposed to it automatically changing them in either case?

One more question: is there a way to apply a new formatting to all instances of a particular style within a document? For example, if I copy/paste a document with custom paragraph styles into a new template, can I change all instances of a particular paragraph style (or list style) to a new style? Such as changing all instances of “imported style 1” to “heading 1” at once as opposed to manually changing each instance one at a time.
