Mac Mini M1 External Storage

I just got a Mac Mini M1and I’d like to add an external SSD drive. I don’t think I need the speed of Thunderbolt 3, and I’d like to spend less. Any recommendations? Things have changed since I bought my last hard drive.

How much storage should I install I have order a Mac Studio M1 Max with a SSD storage of 1 TB. I haven't choose for more, because I have a Lacie 2big Dock Thunderbolt™ 3 with 12 TB storage capacity and two Lacie d2 Professional drives of each 10 TB. So I install only my software on my main drive and place te libraries of all programs on the external drive. So Photo, Music, Final Cut Pro libraries are on the 2big Dock Thunderbolt™ 3 Now I read, see and hear that an internal SSD drive of 8 TB should be much faster as installing the libraries on the external drives. Should I go for a internal SSD of 8 TB and put everything on my Mac or keep working as I do now?

If you are just using it for storage, then go with a USB 3.0 or USB-C External SSD.

Or build yourself one using an 2.5" USB 3.0 or USB-C Enclosure and 2.5" SATA SSD.
