XQuartz on m1?

Is XQuartz working on the new M1 macs?

Or is there another X11 solution available?

I don't have many "critical" apps but X11, shell, & ssh are critical for me.

Mac mini, macOS 11.0

I have Xquartz 2.7.11 running on 11.2 Build 20D53 on an M1 processor.

I simply downloaded the .dmg, allowed the permissions, logged out, logged in, and ssh -X to my linux host worked like a champ.

I haven't done in depth testing, but I'm able to run graphical emacs (version 28) from a linux (Ubuntu 20) machine on my M1 mac.

YMMV

Xquartz is not compatible with m1 Macs, the work around is to install xorg via macports (goto macports website and you will get the details). After installing macports for Big Sur, you can run the command sudo port install xorg if you just want to run X.org client, you can also run sudo port install xorg-server if you want to run X11 server on M1 Mac. After that command is run X11.app (Apple Silicon) will be installed in /Application/MacPorts, there would be one more thing that need to be done. Edit the .zprofile file in the home folder and comment out the line export DISPLAY=:0.

The latest update of Xquartz was released in October 2016, since then Xquartz has not been updated. Which also means that Xquartz is not native on/for m1 Macs. I have already given a reply above in this thread detailing how to install xorg client which is replacement of Xquartz. I have tested the xorg actually works and I have installed xeyes, xplot and xcalc and these ports actually work.

Hi, this looking very useful. Trying to follow the steps on new M1 Mac, but when I get to sudo port install xorg I cannot get past the following error:

Any insights would be very welcome!
