Apps using significant energy even when not open + Not Charging

Since upgrading to Big Sur, my battery rarely charges when connected to the power adapter and using at the same time. I open the Battery info from the menu, and it shows Spotlight and Messages using significant energy even when I am not using those applications. How do I prevent them from using significant energy when I cannot Force Quit them?

If anyone has additional tips for getting the battery to charge while using, please let me know!

Hello sndavis94 and welcome to Apple Support Communities. It appears you are having some difficulty with apps using power when they are not actively being used.

You mention that this has been an issue since the update to Big Sur. Depending on how long ago you did the backup, this may be expected behavior. After the update certain apps and services go through some expensive reindexing. This is definitely so with Spotlight and, depending on how deep your Messages history is and if there are a lot of attachments, may be the case with Messages as well.

Cheers.
