Cannot get iMessages on iMac

I am struggling with an iMessage issue with Big Sur. I also cannot add my phone number to iMessage on my iMac. I have my email addresses, but I was always able to add a phone number as that is what I use on my iPhone and iMac to start messages. Help!

iMessage not Connecting Properly on Mac My MacBook Air's (which is brand new) messages is not syncing properly with my messages from my iPhone. On iCloud, my phone number is all set up. However, on my laptop, when I go to messages > preferences > iMessage > "you can be reached by," my phone number is not listed. As well, when I text from my laptop, people receive my messages from my account email, not my phone number. Essentially, my Mac's messages is only connected to my iCloud email, and it won't connect to my phone number (even though it's verified on iCloud).

iMessages app on Mac(Mojave) accessible only by email address not telephone number? I'm not sure where I went wrong.... I've setup a new to me MacBook Air, it has been upgraded to Mojave ... the Messages app only sees and uses the email address for messaging. The associated AppleID includes both the email and telephone number. It works correctly with an iPhone and the same AppleID. In the iMessages preferences - settings, the "start new conversations from.." is greyed out. No where on the Settings page does it show the telephone number. And the email address that is associated with the Apple ID is checked but also greyed out and can't but unchecked. I have signed out and signed on... and restarted. Since the telephone number is already associated with the Apple ID and working with an iPhone, is there a way to add the telephone number to the MacBook so that it can send/receive texts to the email and telephone number? any thoughts? thanks in advance.

Well, I discovered I had to add my Apple ID to iMessages on my phone (again) and then received a pop-up on my iMac asking if I wanted to add my iPhone number to messages.....and it works. :)
