I have Excel and Quicken files that I have backed up to iCloud. A couple have "taken." The others, some of which are months old, are stuck in the "sync pending" mode. I have no idea what to do about this, or even where or how to search for an answer. If someone knows, I will appreciate your sharing.

iCloud Drive does accept files so long as they're under 50 GB in size and you have sufficient iCloud space. This is outlined here: iCloud Drive FAQ
With this only seeming to happen with third-party apps saving to iCloud Drive, we'd recommend checking with their developers. As an additional test, you can try saving the file to your computer first and then manually moving them to iCloud.

I've just been doing a "save as" to iCloud Drive. Regarding Quicken, it was never a problem until I "upgraded" to the cloud-based subscription version, which is all the company offers now. Those files are the ones that seem to be perpetually syncing. Older files from an older version of Quicken are fine. Regarding Excel, I never noticed a problem until I switched to Office 365, which is also cloud-based software. I wonder if there's something now that causes conflict. It's almost like iCloud doesn't believe they're real.

We see that some of your files don't seem to want to upload properly. Was this syncing through the use of iCloud Drive? If so, see the steps under "If your files don't update to iCloud Drive" on the following article:
