I am creating a photo book in Apple Photos. In the margin on two screens I have an apparent error message comprised of a red triangle with an exclamation point within it. How do I discover the nature of the error and how to correct it?

What system and Photos versions are you running?

What 3rd party app are you using with Photos to create the book, Mimeo or PrestoPhoto.

Or are you using an early version of Photo and creating the book with Photos itself? If so what theme?

If the latter, that error indicator can mean one of two things: 1 - the pixel dimensions of the image on the page is lower than what Photos considers minimal for printing. 2 - there is text that extends beyond the bottom of the text box. Often it can be invisible carriage returns which go below the box. This error will be shown in the text box itself.

Can you post a screenshot of the page showing the error indicator?

Addendum: if you are using Photos to create the book and can save it as a PDF file read the following: Try holding down the Option key and click on the Buy Book button.  That will give you a PDF file that is the same as was uploaded to Apple when they were still offering print services.

If so there's a 3rd party book provider which used to do the printing for Apple as a sub-contractor, Mimeo, that will take PDF files created by iPhoto and Photos and print and bind books and calendars.

Also you can upload the PDF file to PrestoPhotos which can also print and bind books and calendars from iPhoto or Photos pdf files.  They've been doing it for some time now.

Use the PrestoPhotos or Mimeo links above for direct access to the PDF file uploading and book/calendar ordering page for each site.

You are aware, that you will not be able to order the Apple Photo Book for printing from Apple, once you have finished the book? Apple stopped all print services after September 30, 2018.

You can order books and other print products, if you are upgrading your Mac to macOS 10.13 High Sierra. Then you can use third party project extensions to create and order books. See these user tips:

An exclamation point usually means that the resolution of one item on the page is poor or that the original image file of a photo on the page is missing.

Look at the photos on the pages with an exclamation point and try to find the photos in your library. Check the resolution of the photos (width and height in pixels). If the photos do not have at least 200 pixels per inch for the selected photo place holder, move them to a smaller photo box. To print a photo at at 6x4 inches, it should at least have 1200x800 pixels. also try to export the unmodified original of the photo. If you get an error message, that the original is missing, you have to recover the original from your backup and reimport it to Photos.
