iTunes Music Library Disappeared - only showing older version?

Today I opened my iTunes Library and it was empty. My entire library is offline (I do not download music from Apple Music or sync on the cloud). Naturally, I tried to open iTunes Library.itl in Music/iTunes but it says last modified 8 August 2020, and when I open it, it is indeed an older version of my library. I also tried opening Music Library file in Music/Music - again, it's the August version of my library.

The timeline of my library is: I copied over my entire iTunes folder in August from my old Macbook Pro. Since then, I have added more music, adjusted playlists etc. Notably, I have added a lot of music on 24 October and my most recent changes were on 13 November. Everything was working fine then. I can still see those new song files within the Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Music folder. And of course, the correct library is on my phone from when I synced my iPhone with the library on 13 November.

I have a Time Machine backup from 9 November. Bizarrely, the iTunes Library.itl and Music Library.Music Library file are both showing as last modified 8 August? Am I going insane?

The only abnormal thing I can note with this new Macbook is that about 1 week ago I was browsing the internet and the screen went black, the fans blasted for 1-2 seconds and then it restarted. Could this incident possible have corrupted my files and restored versions from August? It doesn't really make much sense as there has been no other incidents/backups/restores. Is the actual library file stored somewhere else??

Any help appreciated. I do not want to re-work 4 months of library changes.

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.15

Just spoke to Apple first line support, they can't escalate my case unless I upgrade to Big Sur, which I want to avoid at the moment. I can still see all the new songs I've added in the Music/Itunes/Itunes Media/Music - so I could easily just add them manually back to my playlist. It doesn't recover all the playlist work I had done, nor does it identify the problem so I can avoid it in the future. I might just take regular backups of the Music Library.musiclibrary file to be safe. Unless you have any other ideas? Thank you

Thanks for the prompt reply. I have read through that page but nothing worked. All my files seem to be last modified in August, which is as strange as it sounds. There are no other backups/versions. And as I stated, this issue is also present on my Time Machine from 9 November. I'm thinking my music library file may be stored in a custom location (but nothing comes up in the search and I'm certain it was standard because I setup my library only a few months ago), or there has been some bizarre corruption/restoring of my music files to an older version. I'm hoping someone has come across this before...

Music doesn't directly update the iTunes Library.itl file. When you access an itl file Music will create a new .musiclibrary database which is what it will use going forward. This is what will get updated. The MusicLibrary.musiclibrary file is a package, i.e. a compressed folder made to look like a single file. I've seen some posts about changes in Music not sticking, but reverting by several months is new. Did you use the shift-start-Music method to access the old .itl file again, or just open Music normally? Do you know where the active Music Library.musiclibrary file is supposed to be? Is that location covered by Time Machine?

When I first opened Music today, I just opened it normally. Then, when I realised my library was missing, I closed it and used shift-start-Music method to locate the Music library file. However, that file was also an older version.

When I use Music now, it is updating the file in Music/Music - but still an old version. When I look at this file on Time Machine (9 Nov), it is showing last modified 11 August 2020 which doesn't make much sense.

Yes, I think that is the best approach. Import the media folder to add in any new content and make sure you have backups of the database. Still at a loss to explain exactly what happened, but I don't think support are likely to be able to help you unwind it. Upgrading the operating system is hardly likely to help resolve the mystery.
