.5x works on everything except the normal rear face camera portion (works on pano, video, slow-mo and timelapse, but not photo) and portrait mode just acts like normal “photo” mode but at 2x.
this is a BRAND NEW iPhone 11 Pro Max (I got it earlier this afternoon because my old pro max was doing the SAME THING and they had to replace the phone)

I figured as much. I was posting more or less to see if this is a common issue with the 11 Pro Max. I spent 3 1/2 hours at the Apple Store that’s 1 hour away from my house and I don’t wanna go there again for another 3 1/2 hours if this is “normal” that’s most likely gonna happen again.
You might need to take it in again. Unfortunately, no one here can do a diagnostic on an camera without the phone being in hand.
You cannot use Portrait mode on the .5x camera on iPhone. This is normal behavior.
I wasn’t trying to use portrait mode on .5x. .5x doesn’t show up in Photo mode AND portrait mode doesn’t work
