my phone keeps opening messages without notifying me or me reading them

my phone will open messages and not give me the notification for a message. when i go to check my messages, there’s no blue dot next to them and the other person has responded. i’ve tried going to the messages section in settings to turn notifications on to “persistent”, but that’s not an option anymore

iPhone XS, iOS 14

Hello macknightly,

Thanks for reaching out to the Apple Support Communities! We understand you are experiencing some issues with your messages coming in and already being marked as read. We are happy to provide some help on this.

If you haven't tried already, we would first recommend force closing the Messages app and reopening it to see if the issue persists. We have some great steps to take to try and resolve issues where an app is not functioning as expected here:

If an app unexpectedly quits, stops responding, or won’t open

If the issue persists after going through those steps, please use the following link to contact Apple Support directly for further assistance: Get Support

We hope this helps.

Best Regards.
