duplicates in projects

After not using iMovie for a few months I opened the program on my 2019 iMac, clicked on the "Projects" button and discovered that there are now a number of my projects with duplicates! Many of the video projects that I had previously created now have a duplicate of that video project sitting right next to the original! How do I know which one is the original project and can I safely delete the duplicate without causing problems with the original project?

Hi, mekanic1,

When a project is duplicated it will have the same title as the original but with the number 1 at the end of the title to distinguish it from the original. Otherwise, the only way to tell the original from the duplicate is to play them both to find out. You might be able to open them and simply examine or scroll along the timeline. I would definitely open both and see what happens, and if they can be played.

A truly duplicate project can be deleted without causing problems with the original project. Any changes that you might have made in the duplicate project would also be lost, since the duplicate would have been deleted.

Do you have any idea how these duplicates might have been created? Do they have exactly the same titles without a "1" after the title of the duplicate? Sometimes when one copies a project from one library to another a duplicate project inadvertently gets created in the originating library. Other than that, I have not seen numerous duplicates being created without being done so by the author of the projects. If it were a glitch in the system I would think that all projects would have been duplicated instead of just a few.

Hello Rich thanks for the prompt response. There isn't a 1 after the title on any of the duplicate videos, the titles are identical.

You are right, not all of my videos were duplicated only some of them.

You mentioned copying a project from one library to another....so if I take clips from one library media and attach it to a video that was produced using media from a different library, could that cause the duplicate? or if I copy a completed video to my external drive would that create a duplicate? I will take play each video on the timeline, as you suggest, to see if they are the same.....if they are identical could I delete one without creating other problems?

If the duplicate projects are identical you can delete one without affecting the other. As noted, you would need to open and play them to be sure. By just deleting a project you would not be deleting the original media that the project is referencing, unless you went to the Event that contains the media and deleted the Event. So if both projects are referencing the same original media in the iMovie library, then deleting one project won't affect the other as long as you don't delete the original media.

I can't tell whether the procedures you mentioned would create an original and a duplicate in one library. Possibly so. You could try with a test project and see.

If you send a copy of a project to a different library, it would have the same identical name in both libraries without a number added to the title unless there were already a project in the destination library of the same name. When you create a duplicate in the same library then that duplicate would have a number added to the title to distinguish it from the original.

Always a good idea to do a File/Consolidate Project Media before transferring or copying a project to another library. Likewise if you are borrowing clips from one library to use in another library, do a File/Consolidate Library media on the destination library after making the copy or transfer.
