Mac suddenly gets stuck in loop

My Mac occasionally gets stuck in an audio loop and repeats the same sound over and over constantly. - bit like a stuck CD. This happens when I am listening to music either on iTunes or remote Mac CD drive player. The only way to stop it is to restart the Mac - ejecting the CD or stopping iTunes does nothing. Any clues. it only happens every now and again
