Ive noticed since Big Sur came out any screenshot I take is not appearing on the desktop. Where are they going, why have you changed such a simple feature?
If you're going to change it at least give a warning on the screen saying they are being relocated. Simple incompetence.
Look in your utilities folder for an app called screenshot. Launch the app and then at the bottom there are options that you can change. One of them is the location where screenshots are saved You can change this back to the desktop or some other location.

Screen shots using command shift 3 save to the Desktop on all my Big Sur installs. So that's where I expect them to be.
Paul Conaway's suggestion should allow you to pick the location you want to use, but if you are using DropBox, it has a history of secretly hijacking the screenshots.
Cheers for suggestion, think its done the job, for some reason it was saving them to clipboard only
I forgot I had saved my location to Clipboard and Paul Conway's suggestion allowed me to change back my saved location back to Desktop. Thanks!
I was able to fix this. It turns out I had to delete a file in ~/Library and restart the Finder. Please disregard the comment above.
Do a search in finder for "screenshots." It will show a folder there with your lost screen shots. Can then send to trash from there.
What was the file name that you had to delete in Library please?
I did not. I have had Dropbox for years as stated already. :)

Did you update Dropbox lately? That could have done it.
