Corrupted Spotlight Index

Since updating to Big Sur, the Spotlight index on an external drive has become corrupted. The original. problem was that word searching produced no results whatsoever. I forced a rebuilt of the index by adding the drive in the Spotlight Privacy pane in System Preferences and then removing it (per Apple's instructions for building the index). After the rebuild, the index is still corrupted, but in a different way. It now produces Spotlight results, but they open the wrong files. In other words, if the Spotlight search shows the search term can be found in file ABC, and I click on that file, it opens file XYZ.

I am rebuilding the index again and hope for better results this time but I don't expect it to work the second time when it failed the first time. Does anyone know why this happens or know the solution?

Your hard drive may be failing. Use http://www.binaryfuit.com

DriveDX to verify the health of the hard drive.

You should always keep at least two copies of your data at all times. Using an external hard drive for primary storage is generally unwise because accidental disconnects can corrupt your data. Although if you are searching through old archives, you might find it better to make an itemized index in a spreadsheet of important files and their contents.

Other reasons could be background application that Etrecheck can identify, and one of us can tell if it is safe to use:

If you haven’t, Refer to these Links...

Hard Drive Recovery Protection:

The next time you purchase an external hard drive of sorts, consider getting a protection plan of sorts with it to recover data of a failed hard drive. Ask the seller if they off this. With no protection, it is likely to cost thousands, just to recover the data.
