Mac Mini (M1) doesn't work with USB-C display

I have a display that I use when i need to be portable, and i want to use it with the M1 Mac Mini with the USB-C cable. It works fine with HDMI port (except for the detected resolution not being the correct one). But with the USB-C cable, it acts like there isn't a monitor plugged in. The monitor works fine on my 2017 15in MacBook Pro with the USB-C Cable. Anyone have a similar issue and have a solution?

Yes - I have a USB-C monitor that was losing connection occasionally with occasional black screen for a few seconds, not recognised after wake, sometimes no picture at all after startup/restart. Very intermittent and spent a fortune on a range of cables (USB-C to USB-C, USB-C to DP of different brand, quality and length with the same result). Tried it on 2 other 4K monitors via USB-C to DP and same result.

Thought it might have been faulty ports.

Much to my dismay I have had to resort to HDMI-HDMI and so far seems OK. I note a lot of others have had problems with HDMI but so far this connection is the most stable for me.

The kicker is that my 2018 MacBook Pro seems to be misbehaving now as well when connected to any of my 4K monitors via a Thunderbolt (USB-C) port. Wondering if it's an issue with Big Sur (or I've got a pile of crap cables).
