Screen turning on and off during calls

while on calls, my screen keeps blacking out and turning back on. This happens while the phone is being held in front of me. The volume is loud enough that I don’t need to have it to my ear. So it isnt from bringing the phone to and from my ear. There is nothing blocking the sensor. It is incredibly frustrating.
