"Unable to verify account name or password" for AOL in Mac Mail.

I had deleted the AOL account on my Mac. When I tried to reestablish the AOL account in Mac Mail I got the message, "Unable to verify account name or password," despite having the correct password that I used to login to the AOL website.

If you are able to login to AOL directly, I have a SOLUTION to this problem!

Login to the AOL website.

Click on Options in the upper right corner of your AOL window.

Click on Account Info

Click on Account Security on the left side of the new window.

AOL will make you login again.

The Account Security window will open.

Click on Manage app passwords.

An App Passwords window will open.

Click the Select Your App drop down menu

Click on Mac Mail

Click on Generate

That will give you a 16 character pass word to copy

It will give you instructions for how to paste that pw into your

System Settings / Internet Account / for AOL.

With this special password you will be able to establish a working AOL account in Mac Mail.
