Use this Adapter: USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter - Apple
With this Adapter: You can connect your External Hard Drive using the female USB-A port for the Drive. With the female USB-C port in the adapter, you will still be able to charge your Mac. So, as a result, you will lose no ports.
I use it and it works excellently and as intended.

Just get a USB-C to USB-A adapter. There are bunch on Amazon.
One example:
$8.99 for a pack of two adapters.
Thanks but I'm not spending $70 on an adapter so I can back up my computer! It should have come with a cable or there should be external drives with type c connectors.
There are some USB drives that come with USB - C connector cables But they will probably cost more than $70 dollars. Or look on Amazon for This
