Can I use my iPhone while my watch is updating?

I had an apple watch, it broke, so I bought a new one. In order for me to pair the new one, I had to update it first (not sure why a brand new watch didn't come fully up to date). Anyways, Im in the middle of updating it through my iPhone. Both my phone and my watch are on their chargers in order to do the update. Is it possible to still utilize my phone while this is happening or will it pause the update?
