Slow performance from new macbook pro m1 ?

Hey there,

Question so I've been debating on pulling the trigger on the new M1 macbooks and I finally did it today, Sold my 15 inch 2017 Macbook pro & I went with the base model 8GB 512GB version of the M1 Macbook Pro. because I didn't want to wait 1+ months to get the 16GB version w/ 1TB SSD I've been watching video reviews on them since they shipped and I was seeing everyone was having CRAZY fast boot up times, Davinchi Resolve handing 4k footage insanely fast on the base model pro and air ..

Today when installing my apps on my laptop the app store crashed so I let it reopen, today I installed Davinchi resolve 17 - and I'm getting very very laggy playback and it's not what I had seen in every other video review. I'm even getting the beach ball on regular usage..

Is my product defective?

I know how to re-install the OS, Unfortunately had to do it with my old 2017MBP when I upgraded to Catalina, but as it's a BRAND NEW MacBook directly from the store not even 12 hours ago I shouldn't have to do this lol.. Why is this a thing?

@Grant Bennet-Alder: Yeah, heard that many times. But what does this "first time" mean? Really only the first time after installing it? Because this wouldn´t even need to be mentioned, because that delay wouldn´t happen a second time with this program.

Or does it mean every time the program opens up after beeing closed (really closed - not only the red dot in the window)?

But since Microsoft Word and Excel running native on apple silicon and still have a big delay when opening (not every time, but nearly most times), it can´t be rosettas "fault".

Cheers,

Tom

I have office 365 on the MacBook Air M1 and word seems ok. It's things like rendering or scrolling a PDF 60 pages or anything requiring cpu performance. That's why I think it is a software or firmware problem. It's the hesitations that is most noticeable. Loading programs isn't a problem. There is no heat problem. So I keep going back to a bios or operating system or cache problem.

OMG, 102,000 points! I could use some of those, do you accept Bitcoin? JK.

Truth of the matter is people have issues with the performance and would prefer assistance and correction over denial and silence. Attestation the causative factor of such disappointing performance is in all instances user-driven is a bit of a stretch. Was not my intent to hurt your feelings or bruise your ego, but users of the M1 likely are aware of what they have installed on their systems and to declare carte blanche the root of the issue to be installation of "aftermarket software" is naive. Anyway, hope you have you have a nice weekend.

Without any information whatsoever, neither my assertion that it could not be hardware nor your assertion that it must be inadequate hardware is likely to be completely correct.

Post your Etrecheck report, and Readers will try to understand what is happening inside your Mac.

The Trade Press thinks the M1 Mac is a very high performer, and computer-makers staying with Intel should be afraid.

Thanks for reply and suggestion. We have certainly researched and our group has decided to move on from the M1 and donate these downline. My comments are not really focused on addressing a particular computer, more to raise awareness that, under deployment, the M1 is not matching the "Trade Press" reporting. As to the future, you might very well be correct. Anyway, thanks again and all the best.

Following this thread as well as some others as I have been experiencing the same. I only purchased the base MBA M1 after all the videos and articles stating it would run circles around my maxed out 2017 MBP. That is so far from the truth after having owned it for almost a week now. I have done a fresh install of the OS and it is still not snappy and simple web work is a tad slower than my MBP. The luxury I have right now is I still have the MBP so I am able to compare side by side and life with the MBA M1 have been aggravating. I am trying to get all ideas in to try to get the MBA to perform better than the MBP per all the hype before my return window is here next week. Will continue to give it a shot but it looks like I may be needing to return the MBA. Using the MBA for my light day to day work (i am not in any graphic intensive or programming profession) makes me so aggitated I want to throw the machine against a brick wall a few times a day.

I am the same poster as Dan_0315. I wanted to write an update on my experience. I must have not done something right in my first fresh install of my base MBA, but two weeks ago, I did another fresh install and all is good now. Super snappy, everything is zoom zoom. Very very satisfied and if things stay this way (i am assuming it will), super happy with everything. Complete fresh install of the OS, as people have suggested is the key. Migration just bogs everything down. Good luck all.

I have a MBP 16". It works wonderfully. Recently I started a new job and I've been taking my laptop to work. It was just too heavy so I started taking my wife's MBP 13" M1. It worked alright for awhile but then it started getting real laggy. I don't use Chrome. Only Safari. Though it still lags every time. Performance is just nothing compared to the 16" I have. The only thing I found more enlightening was the battery life. That is still great. Do these new M1's get bugged down after a month or so? I don't want to reinstall the OS or anything like that. I'm on Big Sur 11.4 now. Maybe it was just a buggy update. Hopefully the next updates fixes this.

This is a very sad conversation. It's now July 2021 and my Mac1 16gb Powerbook that I bought new in December 2020 has been having the problems described here since Day One. It's so slow accessing Dropbox and other external drives that I keep my trusty Dell Linux laptop handy at all times. I also have an M1 Mini and it has the same problem so I doubt it's a hardware issue.

I plead guilty to having lots of tabs open and to having voluminous files that I need to access quickly and often. This is never a problem on Linux, why is it such a problem on my Macs?

I'm about to pull the plug on the Macs (for the second time) and give the Macs to somebody who doesn't need to do much of anything.
