Slow performance from new macbook pro m1 ?

Hey there,

Question so I've been debating on pulling the trigger on the new M1 macbooks and I finally did it today, Sold my 15 inch 2017 Macbook pro & I went with the base model 8GB 512GB version of the M1 Macbook Pro. because I didn't want to wait 1+ months to get the 16GB version w/ 1TB SSD I've been watching video reviews on them since they shipped and I was seeing everyone was having CRAZY fast boot up times, Davinchi Resolve handing 4k footage insanely fast on the base model pro and air ..

Today when installing my apps on my laptop the app store crashed so I let it reopen, today I installed Davinchi resolve 17 - and I'm getting very very laggy playback and it's not what I had seen in every other video review. I'm even getting the beach ball on regular usage..

Is my product defective?

Same story here.

I´ve got the MBA with 16GB RAM, 8 core GPU and 512 GB SSD. While performance on Lightroom and Resolve was very good, overall speed was just OK (same or a little bit slower than my i7 8700k with Samsung M2 SSD). I was a little bit disappointed because all the reviewers called it super snappy even against the Mac Pro and I thought this would also be true in my case.

But I had some serious issues with network and the finder. Finder performance was very bad an every folder took some time to open up the first time. No matter if stored local on the mac´s SSD or on my Synology NAS. Yesterday I had the issue, that I couldn´t create a PDF out of a Microsoft Word File and store it on my NAS. Finder and Word had some kind of freeze for about 5 minutes and then it finished. Local on my SSD it had no issue at all. I also had issues with wired LAN connection using a USB-C Adapter (slow connection, no IP, always using WIFI instead even with changed ranking). The Adapter worked perfectly on my Windows-Machine and I´ve got a pretty decent home network with a Synology DS1817 and an Unfi Ecosystem with the Dreammachine Pro and some switches as well as the new Unfi 6 Lite access points. So I decided to erase the disk of my MBA and give it another try (I really liked the machine so far but this issues were driving me nuts and I really thought about returning it and forget about Apple once an for all - this is my first mac and I´ve always been a die-hard windows user but the m1 seems to be just the machine I´ve been waiting forever).

Long story short: After deleting the hard drive and reinstalling Big Sur 11.2.3 the macbook air is just flying. Super snappy performance. Finder works like a breeze with local files and on my NAS with wifi and cable connection. PDF creation works as it should and the LAN connection gets priority and maxes out GB-speed. Installed my apps slowely after and after just in case the weird behavior would coma back so I know where to search for the issue.

No problems at all. One thing I didn´t do was to enable FileVault. Should make no difference since it only affects boot time and the CPU is capable enough to manage decryption but you never know. Despite the soldered SSD it´s not possible to remove it and plug it into another computer like in the old days. Maybe I´ll acitvate it later but for now I´ll keep it off and watch the machines behavior when doing some real world usage again.

So I have no idea if the previous version of my MBA´s OS had some issues or the first software update caused some troubles (updated the machine just after turning it on). Maybe I did something wrong when setting it up an installing all the apps (remember apple newby and trying a lot of things) or it´s really FileVault.

I´m glad that my machine is working fine now and all of my hopes came true.

Maybe I can help someone with the same issues and bringing back the fun with this great machines.

Cheers,

Tom

OMG, 102,000 points! I could use some of those, do you accept Bitcoin? JK.

Truth of the matter is people have issues with the performance and would prefer assistance and correction over denial and silence. Attestation the causative factor of such disappointing performance is in all instances user-driven is a bit of a stretch. Was not my intent to hurt your feelings or bruise your ego, but users of the M1 likely are aware of what they have installed on their systems and to declare carte blanche the root of the issue to be installation of "aftermarket software" is naive. Anyway, hope you have you have a nice weekend.

Following this thread as well as some others as I have been experiencing the same. I only purchased the base MBA M1 after all the videos and articles stating it would run circles around my maxed out 2017 MBP. That is so far from the truth after having owned it for almost a week now. I have done a fresh install of the OS and it is still not snappy and simple web work is a tad slower than my MBP. The luxury I have right now is I still have the MBP so I am able to compare side by side and life with the MBA M1 have been aggravating. I am trying to get all ideas in to try to get the MBA to perform better than the MBP per all the hype before my return window is here next week. Will continue to give it a shot but it looks like I may be needing to return the MBA. Using the MBA for my light day to day work (i am not in any graphic intensive or programming profession) makes me so aggitated I want to throw the machine against a brick wall a few times a day.

I have a MBP 16". It works wonderfully. Recently I started a new job and I've been taking my laptop to work. It was just too heavy so I started taking my wife's MBP 13" M1. It worked alright for awhile but then it started getting real laggy. I don't use Chrome. Only Safari. Though it still lags every time. Performance is just nothing compared to the 16" I have. The only thing I found more enlightening was the battery life. That is still great. Do these new M1's get bugged down after a month or so? I don't want to reinstall the OS or anything like that. I'm on Big Sur 11.4 now. Maybe it was just a buggy update. Hopefully the next updates fixes this.

This is a very sad conversation. It's now July 2021 and my Mac1 16gb Powerbook that I bought new in December 2020 has been having the problems described here since Day One. It's so slow accessing Dropbox and other external drives that I keep my trusty Dell Linux laptop handy at all times. I also have an M1 Mini and it has the same problem so I doubt it's a hardware issue.

I plead guilty to having lots of tabs open and to having voluminous files that I need to access quickly and often. This is never a problem on Linux, why is it such a problem on my Macs?

I'm about to pull the plug on the Macs (for the second time) and give the Macs to somebody who doesn't need to do much of anything.

I'm a long time Mac user and was really stoked for the M1 release. Traded in my 15" MBP for a M1 MBP and...

Well, frankly, I'm disappointed. So much so that I'm thinking of going to a Windows notebook. My MBP is sluggish at a lot of stuff. Opening apps often results in beachballs. Long lag times while browsing.

It's been like this out of the box. I'm pretty invested in the whole Apple architecture, but I also run a Linux server and a couple of Windows gaming machines, so I feel I can live in WindowsWorld quite happily. I just will do so reluctantly.

If you've had an excellent experience, good on you! I'm jealous.

I'm having the same issue. I moved to a 16GB RAM 1TB SSD m1 MacBook pro from a surface pro 7 quad-core i5 which was 2 years old and was released a year prior to that... I'm severely disappointed with the speed of the m1. I went for top specs just to get the best performance but it lags behind my old Microsoft device in many respects. It runs ridiculously cool in comparison which is a huge plus for the MacBook. Surprisingly, Microsoft Office runs significantly better than on my Microsoft device, and some apps are better, but its clear apple has prioritized efficiency over effectiveness. Capability, in general, is decreased on the MacBook but I guess this is how they achieve better performance in other areas. The battery life is definitely not what was seen on many reviews though it is sufficient for a full working day (at least it has been while it's new, I can't vouch for it on a long-term basis).

If deciding to upgrade again, would I do it? Yes, but only because I'm using it to study to become a developer and for some weird reason, macs seem to work really well for this purpose. Many students have switched to macs for this sole reason within my class. If it wasn't for that purpose, I would easily choose another windows device, I just wouldn't choose a Microsoft surface again.

My M1 is still slow. I reckon this was just the prototype. Released to let the public use so the engineers can properly determine what to fix and how to make the next one more proper and functional. Sadly we had to pay quite a lot for a chip that was not yet at least 90%. It feels good. Battery lasts longer but it’s the most sluggish laptop I’ve ever used. And I don’t install anything. Just use it for school. So just safari and Microsoft apps. And there’s just so many advise on limiting usage to improve performance. Should it be this way to begin with?
