New MacBook Air (M1, 2020) crashing all the time!

New M1 MacBook Air keeps crashing and freezing... I can't force quit as the keyboard becomes unresponsive.

Help!

Anyone else out there struggling with this?

I keep checking for system updates but nothing yet...

Erased and reinstalled OS at last 10

times. Apple sent it off for repairs twice. They couldn’t find any issues but still replaced logic board and touchpad both times. It still came back with same problems of freezing as soon as I used keyboard or touchpad. I was without a usable machine for almost two months from I bought it new. Spent many hours on phone with Apple support who didn’t have a clue and passed me around, often never getting back to me. They constantly refused to exchange it even though it was obvious the machine was a dud. Eventually they relented and I finally got a replacement. It works fine just as it should. And that was on 11.1 I remain convinced it was a hardware issue.

FWIW, all of those with issues should download Etrecheck

from the MacApp Store, run it and post the results here

using the additional text icon at the bottom of these windows.

I find more often than not that there is some third party app

or extension either knowingly or unknowingly installed that

are causing such issues or said apps are simply not compatible

with the M1 or for that matter macOS Big Sur.

My MacBook Air (8 CPU/8 GPU/ 8 GB RAM) model is running great and

beyond all my expectations. So, there is something unique

on your individual systems that is causing problems.

Thanks, I've done as you suggested and downloaded EtreCheck. I have pasted the report below.

Before doing so, I also restarted the Mac in safe mode (as suggested elsewhere on this forum), which seemed to stop the freezing and beach ball appearing. I have now restarted in normal mode and haven't had the beachball yet. Still too soon to say, but I'm hoping that has resolved it.

After reading other forums I also wondered if the Dropbox app may have been causing these delays. I have many files syncing and others set to not sync (with selective syncing).

safe mode does not fix the issue for me. Still crashes. I actually think it is to do with Mail and Big Sur now. I have isolated the crashing only occurring when mail is running and nothing else. Also my MacBook Pro with intel processor and Big Sur had the same crash event yesterday. Not as frequent and more stable on the Intel, but still crashed. I need to somehow reduce the memory on my mail program, or switch over to outlook.

Hi guys,

I’m experiencing the same issue with a MacBook Pro M1 - 16gb - 256 ssd.

It seems that it’s start to freeze only with safari and always when a lot of gmail pages are open. Its quite annoying to make a hard reset to get to normal.

Seems to be a problem on a lot of owners’s M1 processors MacBooks (Apple’s forum, Reddit and Twitter feeds).

Is a update already being planned ?

New MacBook M1 trackpad faulty - creaking noise - not responding as it should - 2 laptops with same problem - Apple refusing to acknowledge it as a fault or problem they need to fix. Expecting customer to be without a computer for weeks and possibly even 'buy a replacement' before returning faulty item. Apple staff completely unable to be human - Apple company policy prevents it - they are almost aggressive in defending Apple 'protocol'..
