New MacBook Air (M1, 2020) crashing all the time!

New M1 MacBook Air keeps crashing and freezing... I can't force quit as the keyboard becomes unresponsive.

Help!

Anyone else out there struggling with this?

I keep checking for system updates but nothing yet...

MacBook Air 13″, 11.0

Erased and reinstalled OS at last 10

times. Apple sent it off for repairs twice. They couldn’t find any issues but still replaced logic board and touchpad both times. It still came back with same problems of freezing as soon as I used keyboard or touchpad. I was without a usable machine for almost two months from I bought it new. Spent many hours on phone with Apple support who didn’t have a clue and passed me around, often never getting back to me. They constantly refused to exchange it even though it was obvious the machine was a dud. Eventually they relented and I finally got a replacement. It works fine just as it should. And that was on 11.1 I remain convinced it was a hardware issue.

After almost two months of insisting the machine was faulty and having it go away for repairs twice with no fix, I finally found an online tech advisor who eventually (reluctantly) agreed to replace it with a new one. I can't believe how much I had to constantly push for this and how many calls I made to Apple Support. The replacement MacBook Air M1 arrived and has been perfect. Exactly how it should have been from the start. Given how many times the entire OS was reinstalled and it having the logic board replaced twice, it seems to me like there was a major hardware fault from the start.

Hi, I just got the same issue this morning, it was after enabling an extension for pcloud.com software ... I just remove the extension, killed the software and everything went back to normal ... I think the platform is quite new and some developpers are still making mistake (even big company like pcloud ...)

So maybe just try disabling the extensions / softwares you have added recently ...

Or you can try using the "old" software from these companies with Rosetta ...

Thanks, I've done as you suggested and downloaded EtreCheck. I have pasted the report below.

For one, check with Wacom to make sure their product is not just M1

compatible but also Big Sur compatible. Sometimes hardware devices

can gum up the works if they are try to communicate with drivers and

drivers tryin to connect but neither see each other.

I noticed some Google stuff and I know their Backup and Sync (Google Drive)

is problematic on M1 Macs and some non-M1 running Big Sur.

Dropbox may also have similar issues as Google Drive does. A quick Google came up

with a Dropbox beta release for clearing up M1 issues.

The Adobe CC stuff had some initial issues but it seems macOS 11.0.1 fixed

somethings and the CC update fixed others.

I think I have found some success. Erase drive, and Big Sur reinstall. Not restoring from backup, just using iCloud Documents and Desktop etc. Not installing any third party apps so far. All is good.

If this holds true over time it is most clearly a software issue. Will add apps one at a time and try to determine which is causing the issues. I agree this approach won't work for many people.

I gave another try, moving to PC was not good (problem with Postgresql, Linux not working fine, too much fan noise when running CUDA ...). Thanks to the great customer policy from Mediamarkt, I was able to return the PC and get another macbook pro ... result, this new one works perfectly, no bugs, no issues at all (pytorch not supported yet, but Keras/tensorflow working perfectly), pcloud works fine ... I think the issues may come from the hardware being faulty on the previous one ... I think you should go to Apple and ask for an exchange ...

My M1 MBA showed a message that iCloud doesn't work. I was asked to check the iCloud settings. From that moment, the Finder started to become unresponsive. The problem continued in Safe Mode. The Finder kept freezing all the time.

My solution: I created a new Admin user and deleted the other one where I experienced the issues. Now everything works like a charm again. I have no idea what caused the problem but I believe it was related to the strange iCloud error message that caused something in the Finder integration to completely snap.

I have the same problem. Wish I had read this before purchasing Apple Silicon Mac mini. Based on the extreme numbers it appears that it is widespread. Don’t understand why Apple does not respond and come up with a fix . Spent several hours on the phone with Apple support about this. In my case I think the culprit is Safari. When I quit using it and switched to Chrome for Apple silicon have not had the problem. It is now my default browser. I too used migration assistant and think that is source of problem. May try clean install today

when I first got my MacBook Pro 8gb, it was a nightmare. Crashing and freezing every 20 mins or so. I’ve uninstalled chrome and updated the OS a few times and it’s much better.

im only using visual studio, safari and Xcode.

I did accept they’re may have been some teething issues with the new chips whilst software vendors updated apps.

I did keep my old MacBook Pro just in case but I think I’m almost confident I can let that go.
