iphone 12 dropping calls

My iPhone 12 Pro has been dropping nearly all calls since receiving after launch. The tech said "Oh, the diagnostic reported 13 out of 18 calls dropped recently, so that's not good". I purchased through Verizon, and have since gone through multiple resets, SIM card replacements and phone replacement and still have the same issues. All of the support was through Verizon and ultimately Verizon said this was a known issue with Apple and that I should take it up with them. So I just finished testing with an Apple tech, after over an hour on another phone I had to borrow to get this addressed. The Apple tech took it to his level 2 who ultimately said it was a Verizon issue, without a doubt because there is zero chance 2 new phones would have the same issue. They then placed me on hold because they said they wanted to bring Verizon on the call because I told them Verizon said to take it up with Apple. The Apple tech gave up after 35 minutes of being on hold and said we could try again later. Ha!

So no one is owning this known issue and I am stuck with a $1000 piece of garbage. Never again! I am going to have to shell out more money to get another phone and I am absolutely dropping Verizon as well. I would really like to know through all of this, is there anyone with the new iPhone 12 that is not having any dropped calls?

We have iPhone 12 and 12 Pro Max both on AT&T and not a single dropped call yet since launch of both.

This leads me to ask those who are having dropped call issues the following questions.

  1. Did you transfer the sim from your previous phone to your new phone? If you did, you should get a new sim which is provisioned for 5g
  2. Go to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Voice & Data - What is it checked? If you live in an area with minimal to no 5G service (5G is still rolling out across a lot of the world), and your phone is set to 5G, you'll drop calls. Change it to 5G Auto or if you don't have 5G where you live to LTE

Otherwise it seems from those posting here, the common issue is Verizon. You should be hammering Verizon on this as it's most unlikely an issue with the phone. The entity who controls calls on your phone is not Apple. It is your cellular provider.

The network cannot be expected to overhaul the entire nation’s infrastructure overnight to accommodate apple’s newest phone.

The fact is that my old phone worked fine where I live. The new phone does not work as well. It’s as simple as that.

To elaborate a little further, I believe I have identified the problem in my case. I live in a secluded area on the fringes of my networks coverage. I rely solely on cellular data at my home due to Wifi not being available. I am more sensitive to diminished reception abilities due to these circumstances.

I presume the “millions of satisfied iPhone 12 users” you continually cite to diminish my claims all live in urban areas and/or have ready access to wifi throughout the day.

If you want to ignore the full explanation I've given you several times, there's nothing more I can say to make you understand.

Your argument is the functional equivalent of stating you are returning your FM radio because you tried an AM radio and it's good enough, and if that's the case, I wish you well.

There's no need to own a surround receiver if an AM radio is all you want.

You didn't understand what I said. I never said it was ONLY Verizon. I said, in case you didn't read what I wrote that there are others reporting issues with their carrier too. But the predominant carrier mentioned here is Verizon. That doesn't mean other carriers are immune to not setting up their 5G network well. Any carrier can mess up. You keep wanting to pin the blame exclusively on Apple. That's the wrong direction. I know a LOT of people on iPhone 12 in my city, none of who seem to be having any dropped call issues. And I know people on Verizon and T-Mobile too. Someone where I live, the cell towers seem to be configured appropriately to handle 5G Service. How can Apple fix something which is not universally broken? And you keep failing to understand that Apple has nothing to do with the cellular network you pay for. You need to push your carrier in Canada to resolve this.

PS: I didn't edit your post in the real. I used the quote button (") in task bar below which starts with B I U and then changed the word from Apple to Verizon. You could do the very same with any post I write.

I'm so glad I found this forum - I was beginning to think I'm just nuts and my phone is fine. I have an iPhone 12, on Verizon, and I can barely use my phone for calls. Oddly, some days are better than others. I cannot find a pattern with the malfunction. I'm on my 4th iPhone 12 in the past 9 months. I purchased the first one. The 2nd and 3rd were replaced by Verizon, warranty claim due to dropped calls. The 4th one was replaced by Asurion, as phone #3 was damaged in an accident (my fault). All four iPhones have the same dropped calls issue. I have taken phones #1 and #2 for Genius appts, and they say the phone works fine and advise me to talk to Verizon. Verizon tells me to reset the network settings, and that should help the signal quality. I've been a Verizon customer for 17 years, but this is ridiculous. I have a phone that can't be used for calls. I'm really at wits end, I want to stay with Apple, maybe migration to AT&T is the answer ?

Lobster, clearly you have no idea how mobile networks and devices interact. There are many intricacies and finger pointing. Yes this iphone 12 problem is absolutely isolated to VZ but each device supplier is required to qualify their devices to the requirements of each different operator network. There is no telling who's problem it is or a shared problem without more data. I would point out that device software (free) and hardware ($1k each) are much easier to change/update than networks ($10B+ per year investment). I study this as part of my career and don't appreciate your shoot-from-the-hip rhetoric.

Sooo I agree with you too . But I have done all but change carriers because mine is paid for by the company I work for. I had an iPhone11 and never had issues. . My husband bought this for me. And then It all started.

So what do you think I should do? I respect your opinion /experience. I don’t have the time to sit on the phone with either company. My IT dept has attempted to assist. But yet here we are !

thanks in advance
