All of sudden my iPad screen is bowed up on both sides. I do not recall damaging it in any way. The display is very slow but it works. I have backed up all of my information in case it quits. It looks like there is something underneath on the inside pushing it up. Thoughts, help, suggestions welcome. Thank you very much!

What year and model do you own and what iOS version is it currently running?
It seems as if the internal batteries maybe failing/expanding out of control.
The expansion of the internal battery is serious and could be a serious fire hazard risk.
Stop using that iPad immediately and call to make an appointment with your nearest, “local” Apple Store for proper diagnosis and potential options.
Most important, just stop using this iPad.

I’m so sorry, I do not have any of the specs written down. I believe it is an iPad Air first or second generation, 32GB. I have had it for a good five or six years I think. I am quite sure it has outlived any warranties or extended warranties I may have purchased and it certainly doesn’t owe me anything at this point. The case I have it in fits very snug. I was thinking that may have been part of the problem. You also confirmed my other thought that it may be battery related. I had not thought of it being a fire hazard. Although I have taken it out of the case, I have kept it charging. I will unplug it and cease using it immediately. Thank you kindly for your quite possibly lifesaving advice!
May I ask you a question since you seem so knowledgeable? I depend on my iPad and use it instead of a laptop. I was thinking of purchasing the IPad 8th generation 10.2 32 GB for $329 as a replacement. Without going into specifics, would you recommend this model and would my current apps be compatible?

You will need to check the apps in the app store to make sure they are compatible with the latest iOS version.
And, you really should consider getting an iPad with a larger storage - I would recommend at least 64 GB or more.
make sure you have a complete backup before setting up the new one so you can easily set it up using your backup.
I would not stay with a 32 GBs device in 2020.
With iPadOS taking up a decent amount of internal storage space now ( nearly 6 GBs in size ), a 32 GBs iPad ONLY has a usable, actual internal storage data space of approx. 20 GBs, now.
Not of lot of internal storage space for today's everyday use!
Apple iOS devices have a fixed amount internal data storage space that can never, ever be increased/expanded.
The 8th gen IPad has the 128 GBs internal storage option
I would purchase this larger storage option.
A 128 GBs internal storage iPad will have approx. 110 GBs of usable, actual internal data storage space, which is approx. 5-1/2 times the amount of intenal data storage space of a 32 GBs model iPad.
