Transferring music files from a USB drive to Apple Music

I have a fairly new 2020 16" MacBook Pro (Catalina) and am trying to transfer music files from a USB flash drive to Apple Music (previously iTunes) on my computer, but it simply isn't working.

A bit of background:

Because Apple decided to do away with disc drives on MacBooks, it seems I have to jump through hoops to get my CDs copied onto my new computer. So I used my husband's Windows laptop which has a CD/DVD drive to copy the music files onto a flash drive. The files are in .cda format, which I'm not familiar with. Could the reason the files aren't transferring have to do with this file format or some setting in Apple Music that is preventing the file transfer?

Any advice you can provide would be appreciated.

Kindly,

SJS

Try CDA to MP3:

CDA is Microsoft. So, if these were MP3 files, then I could see them being a successful, playable file. So, try copying one of the files, pasting it in a new folder, and modifying its extension to MP3. See what happens when you play the MP3 file on iTunes on the PC. Does it play?

Yes, that is a common mistake on Windows. When Windows File Explorer looks at a CD, the only thing it can "see" is the .CDA index files, and some people just copy the .CDAs, mistakenly thinking they are getting the music.

But no worries, when you go back to the Windows machine you can properly rip the CD with whatever program is handy there, such as Windows Media Player or iTunes. That will give you usable files for your Mac.
