Back up your data, check your applications for compatibility, and download High Sierra, Mojave, Catalina, or Big Sur.

If you are going to install Mojave then bear in mind that your previously downloaded version of Mojave ( but not installed) may not be the latest available , as that would depend on when you downloaded it. The Mojave link highlighted above by Niel is of course the latest ( and last) version available and is version 10.14.6 .

Yes, there is; in particular, if you upgrade to Catalina or newer, 32-bit software will no longer run.

HI Niel. Thank you for the quick reply. looks like i have High Sierra and Mojave downloaded in my apps page. I guess i just never ran them. i have a lot of data on my MAC. I guess i have a lot of backing up to do. Is there a danger of losing anything otherwise? are these safe upgrades?

oh. wow. good to know. Thank you! I guess i shouldn't go higher than Mojave then. Can i skip High Sierra (which I believe was after El Capitan) and go straight to MoJave, or do i need to them both in sequence?
