Camera not working in Big Sur

Hey Apple,

After updating to OS X Big Sur my camera has stopped working. This goes for every application, including FaceTime, Zoom, Teams etc.

I have tried rebooting to no avail.

Can you please help?

Regards,

Jacob

Does this help? From https://discussions.apple.com/thread/252040930?answerId=254102270022#254102270022 it says:

"I had the same issue, what I found was that my Virus Protection software "Kaspersky" had set the privacy setting to block the Webcam, changed it to Allow Webcam and now its ok. I didn't have this issue when using previous versions of Mac OS, for those that's having an issue it might be worth a look"

Hi, I have been taking so long time to resolve this.

I have tried everything here https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT211130 , but nothing works.

However, I saw other posts and checked this directory.

/Library/CoreMediaIO/Plug-Ins/DAL/AppleCamera.plugin/

I found the SnapCamera.plugin there. I had uninstalled SnapCamera.app before, but apparently the plug-in file was still there....

So I removed it, and my iMac recognized the camera again! Thanks for the information.

An embarrassing update on my issue (MBP 2016 Big Sur 11.2.3, camera stopped working for Facetime when migrated from Catalina to Big Sur)...

I contacted Apple again and was put in touch with a tech who worked with me to view various settings. He noticed I was running Norton and asked I could "turn it off" to see if it was causing an issue. Absomolutely! I de-installed Norton entirely and upon restarting, my camera was once again working. He recommended I get with Norton to see if they could fix the issue, stating that how some camera settings may have been changed and applied differently and that Norton may not have caught up yet.

I should have tried that on my own. In hindsight, blaming Apple so quickly without exhausting all avenues was an embarrassing mistake {blush}. Not that they haven't been slow to respond to other issues in the past mind you. They've had their share of poor performances.

I reinstalled Norton and was pleased to find that my camera still works. I assume something in what Norton had done in settings to work with Catalina got stepped on by Big Sur, but when reinstalled it was smart enough to successfully work with and around Big Sur. No follow-up with Norton required. Yay!

So my problem is solved, but I am sure many of you do not run Norton so feel this is unhelpful for you. Understandable. What I would suggest however, is looking at any application that uses your camera and ensuring it is up to date, PERHAPS even going so far as to uninstall/reinstall., especially any anti-malware app(s) or other system-level you may have running.

I hope this is helpful to at least some of you. I wish you the very best of luck!

Click on "System Report" under Apple->About My Mac

Do have a "camera" under the "Hardware" section? If so, when you click on it does it contain any data?

If you don't have an entry for camera, then it's possible the camera failed in some way and needs to be checked out. Let us know if there is any data in that panel.

Another option in case there's a security issue, crate a new, administrator-level account for testing purposes. Go into that new account. Does the camera work there? If so, there's a configuration/security issue with your current userID.

Not to say yours is unique, but I've upgraded countless of Macs to Big Sur, MacBooks and iMacs spanning years as far back as 2013... not one issue. So I can understand your frustration, but lets work the problem through. Your mack is still quite current so I hope it's something obvious.

My friends! My computer is the MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2016, Two Thunderbolt 3 ports), when I upgraded to Big Sur 11.2.3 my camera stopped working, I did all the procedures and nothing resolved. During the diagnostic test I received the hardware error information NDC001. To my surprise, my macbook is included in the Apple repair program in relation to monitor problems, I took it to an authorized service center and my computer really fit the Apple repair program, and in that way my computer screen was changed, totally free, and so it solved the problem of my camera. I recommend to those who have a computer like mine, do the same procedure, as this repair is only valid up to 5 years after the date of purchase. Thank you all!

OK. It's not looking great and I don't think a reinstall of Big Sur will make a difference (although it's always worth a try.

That said, you could reboot your Mac holding down Shift - Option (⌥) - Command (⌘) - R  until a spinning globe appears, then release the keys. That will start in Internet Recovery mode (might take ten minutes or so).

This should download then boot into the version of macOS that your Mac originally came with. Don't use it to install anything but if it gives you the option, see if it lets you check the camera setting again. If it still fails, having bypassed Big Sur, it's likely to be a camera fault (story). If it works, a reinstall on Big Sur might help after all.

Did you check your laptop security account? I have Kaspersky and I happened to update Kaspersky at a similar time I updated my laptop. Kaspersky security blocked my camera access which is why FaceTime and Zoom we’re not working and also why when you check Apple About it would state no camera identified and also why when you ran diagnostics there was no issue with the hardware. I did everything as well before checking Kaspersky lol so I feel the pain. If that does not solve the issue then I am out of solutions.

I thought I pasted info but it didn't show up. Big Sur v11.1. 2.7GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7. 16GB 2133 MHZ LPDDR3. Radeon Pro 455 2 GB. Intel HD Graphics 530 1536MB.

FaceTime HD Camera (Built-in):

Model ID: UVC Camera VendorID_1452 ProductID_34304

Just used Zoom and it worked fine. I thought I had already installed Zoom but it reinstalled. Maybe the problem is with the camera meeting software needing reinstalled.
