Camera not working in Big Sur

Hey Apple,

After updating to OS X Big Sur my camera has stopped working. This goes for every application, including FaceTime, Zoom, Teams etc.

I have tried rebooting to no avail.

Can you please help?

Regards,

Jacob

This worked for me:

Route 1 - verify that "camera is allowed" for your user account:

System Preferences (window)

Screen Time (icon)

Content & Privacy (left panel)

Apps (tab)

Allow (section): Camera

Route 2 - Update to Big Sur 11.1

Tip: update in Safe Mode (hold Shift key while booting). Don't rely on the "15 minutes install time", it will take 1+ hour, if you have an encrypted disk, be patient :-)

Turning off Vulnerability Protection doesn’t “fix” anything. It simply eliminates Norton executing its piece of firewall code that apparently blocks operation of the camera.

I believe there is an imperfect understanding on the part of Norton and some other anti-malware providers as to exactly how the camera operates and behaves. Something about the camera configuration and underlying support code is being misunderstood by Norton, et al, and triggering their malware defenses. It would appear that Apple has not done a good job of communicating changes in camera support inherent in Big Sur.

All that said, a thorough reading of this entire discussion shows that the issue occurs on Macs that are not running a/v software, so this appears to be just one facet of a more complex issue that Apple still needs to address in its entirety.

Hi All,

I am facing same issue from last few months after updating software. I took Macbook Pro 2018 to apple support but they were not able to resolve issue and told me it may be a hardware issue. They told me they need to change the whole display which will cost me somewhr near 700 $. Too costly so denied it.

I tried all possible solution available online but no use. Not sure if apple is looking into this issue.

Thank You,

Nik

Hi Everyone,

So, I have just spent time going through this whole thread because I too have a similar problem with my 2017 MacBook Pro with Touch Bar. The camera suddenly stopped being recognised/working in any application and I have not found a solution yet. Like many of you I too have been 'assuming' that Apple will resolve this and send out an update to fix the issue ~ I cannot believe this is a hardware issue either. Thank you all for your suggestions so far and if I find a solution I will let you all know.

Thanks all. If anyone finds a solution, please share. Looking at similar chats, the problem has been going on since November last year, I cannot believe a company like Apple hasn't fixed it yet, not even acknowledged it. I'm so disappointed, it really makes me question their products (which I've always loved), and the company itself. What a huge let down.

Hi Everyone, so I went online with Apple Support last week and they took me through the whole process of creating an additional volume on my MacBook and installing Big Sur again...which I did, to no avail. Camera is still not working. I think the purpose of doing this was to eliminate any possibility that a third party app is causing the issue. So, now it seems it is either a hardware issue ~ which coincidentally is affecting a large number of people...or still an issue with Big Sur. As ever grateful for any other suggestions and will update further if I get anything more from Apple Support.

I'm using Macbook Pro 2017 Touchbar 4 thunderbolts and got this same issue for over a month.

The camera error thing happens even when I was at Catalina OS - then I updated to Big Sur 11.4 and it's still the same. This could not related to the hardware issue, because it was fine last month. I tried all solutions (reset SMC, PR, upgrade software, check Privacy Setting, Screentime, etc. - there couldn't be anything else).

Also, another thing I found out today, even my external Logitech C930e did not work anymore on Big Sur 11.4. What a coincidence? Tried to upgrade the software from Logitech and many things but didn't work.

And you know what? I uninstall Zoom.us app and now at least the external camera is working. Thank God for that. Don't know what happened but the old Zoom version (since last year) might cause the issue with the Logitech camera.

It's sad that the built-in camera is still not working even after installing Zoom. But it's a good point to see there are some obvious problems with Big Sur and camera connection (there's another topic about Thunderbold-USB hub connection error as well). Can't wait to see how they are gonna fix this because this topic is over 6 months and nearly thousand of users reported it, it could not just be a hardware problem.

I'm having the same issue but mine started when I upgraded to 11.4. I checked the screen time settings, app permissions, reset the SMC, created a new admin user, boot up in safe mode. Nothing works. I get the green light for about 10 seconds then it goes away. Zoom and FaceTime both say they are not receiving a video signal. This is very disappointing. Had issues with my apple watch recently as well. I hope apple isn't losing touch with their customers.
