Camera not working in Big Sur

Hey Apple,

After updating to OS X Big Sur my camera has stopped working. This goes for every application, including FaceTime, Zoom, Teams etc.

I have tried rebooting to no avail.

Can you please help?

Regards,

Jacob

This worked for me:

Route 1 - verify that "camera is allowed" for your user account:

System Preferences (window)

Screen Time (icon)

Content & Privacy (left panel)

Apps (tab)

Allow (section): Camera

Route 2 - Update to Big Sur 11.1

Tip: update in Safe Mode (hold Shift key while booting). Don't rely on the "15 minutes install time", it will take 1+ hour, if you have an encrypted disk, be patient :-)

I also lost my camera functionality after Big Sur 11.1 installed. I tried two hours worth of suggestions with no luck. The camera is listed as a device but not recognized by any programs that need it including Zoom and FaceTime.

Please help as the camera is needed now more than ever for work and personal contacts!

I turned on my. 2019 MBP last night to discover the same issue. I have been running Big Sur since it was originally released and only experienced this problem last night. Talked to support and updated my software. rebooted. went into safe mode force quit through terminal and nothing seems to be fixing the problem. I really do not want to send it in for an appointment as classes resume on Monday through zoom.

Anyone have any luck yet?

I updated to Big Sur 11.1 and now the mac thinks there is no camera installed. About this mac / System report / Hardware / Camera reports "No video capture devices were found". If I follow your Route 1, it shows the camera already ticked. This coincided with the Big Sur update. Either there is a problem with the updated OS or the update has somehow made the camera invisible to the OS. Could be a driver issue?

With me, I can see the Built In Camera in Hardware. I can also "see" the Camera in FaceTime. And the camera light goes green - but there is no picture :-( For example -in FaceTime there is a "blink" but the picture stays black and FaceTime gives a message: FaceTime has not received any video from the connected camera

Hey Jacob,

Just wanted to let you know I have the exact same issue and have done everything you have done as well and same exact results. I just updated to 11.1 and still did not fix the issue. Retried everything as stated above on the 11.1 and no change also. I do not want to uninstall which could cause even further harm. Very disappointing as I also require my laptop for remote zoom calls daily as I am a medical student educator.

I find it hard to believe that so many people seem to be experiencing this major problem, and no solution has been found yet.

Does Big Sur, perhaps, perform a firmware update which contains bugs? (This would explain why downgrading doesn't fix the problem as firmware does not (as far as I know) revert to an earlier version if you downgrade your macOS version.

Did you check your laptop security account? I have Kaspersky and I happened to update Kaspersky at a similar time I updated my laptop. Kaspersky security blocked my camera access which is why FaceTime and Zoom we’re not working and also why when you check Apple About it would state no camera identified and also why when you ran diagnostics there was no issue with the hardware. I did everything as well before checking Kaspersky lol so I feel the pain. If that does not solve the issue then I am out of solutions.
