Camera not working in Big Sur

Hey Apple,

After updating to OS X Big Sur my camera has stopped working. This goes for every application, including FaceTime, Zoom, Teams etc.

I have tried rebooting to no avail.

Can you please help?

Regards,

Jacob

Does this help? From https://discussions.apple.com/thread/252040930?answerId=254102270022#254102270022 it says:

"I had the same issue, what I found was that my Virus Protection software "Kaspersky" had set the privacy setting to block the Webcam, changed it to Allow Webcam and now its ok. I didn't have this issue when using previous versions of Mac OS, for those that's having an issue it might be worth a look"

I'm using Macbook Pro 2017 Touchbar 4 thunderbolts and got this same issue for over a month.

The camera error thing happens even when I was at Catalina OS - then I updated to Big Sur 11.4 and it's still the same. This could not related to the hardware issue, because it was fine last month. I tried all solutions (reset SMC, PR, upgrade software, check Privacy Setting, Screentime, etc. - there couldn't be anything else).

Also, another thing I found out today, even my external Logitech C930e did not work anymore on Big Sur 11.4. What a coincidence? Tried to upgrade the software from Logitech and many things but didn't work.

And you know what? I uninstall Zoom.us app and now at least the external camera is working. Thank God for that. Don't know what happened but the old Zoom version (since last year) might cause the issue with the Logitech camera.

It's sad that the built-in camera is still not working even after installing Zoom. But it's a good point to see there are some obvious problems with Big Sur and camera connection (there's another topic about Thunderbold-USB hub connection error as well). Can't wait to see how they are gonna fix this because this topic is over 6 months and nearly thousand of users reported it, it could not just be a hardware problem.

I had installed Big Sur and the updates as they came out, so Zoom and FaceTime had been working fine for a few weeks since the last update. Yesterday, following a Zoom update, the camera stopped working for Zoom but was ok for FaceTime. Shortly afterwards, FaceTime froze then after a restart went black. Hardware diagnostic says the camera is fine and what happened didn't look like failing hardware. I contacted Apple by chat, went through all the things I'd already tried, then was referred to phone support. The phone support guy cut straight to reinstalling iOS. He essentially admitted that there is a known flaw and that it might well recur after I restore the computer...

I have this issue too, I waited 2 mos. to install Big Sur on my MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Mid 2014) because I've heard issues about it. However, it gave me a hard time installing the update, it kept failing for some reason. I had to fresh install.

In any case, I noticed my camera stopped working after the update, on my System Report under Camera: No video capture devices were found.

I called a local third party repair shop, but they told me to try to go back to Catalina first because some of the customers are reporting the same issues with them after the upgrade, it looks like it's really BS update problem, more than a hardware.

  1. Hey guys. I just googled for the millionth time, and somebody on Quora said that their Apple Camera plug-n was missing. It is supposed to be in /Library/CoreMediaIO/Plug-Ins/DAL/AppleCamera.plugin. The poster said they plugged a USB port into somebody else's mac and copied their plugin and put it into the directory and the camera started working. So I checked, and I do not have the plugin either. Is this the solution? Does anyone here HAVE that plugin and still have problems? Edited: Ach, that Quora post was from 2018. What are the chances it pertains to us?

Yep. I have this same issue as well now. I called in and they told me to start it up in safe mode - after doing so the camera still didn't work. Then they told me it's a hardware issue and I should bring it into the store. I did, but they ran hardware diagnostics and it said it wasn't a hardware issue. They suggested I reinstall the operating system - after backing everything up and doing that it still didn't fix it, which makes me pretty sure this is an issue with Big Sur. Apparently this is a common-ish issue too: https://piunikaweb.com/2021/03/15/macos-big-sur-camera-not-working-issue-and-its-workarounds/

Turning off Vulnerability Protection doesn’t “fix” anything. It simply eliminates Norton executing its piece of firewall code that apparently blocks operation of the camera.

I believe there is an imperfect understanding on the part of Norton and some other anti-malware providers as to exactly how the camera operates and behaves. Something about the camera configuration and underlying support code is being misunderstood by Norton, et al, and triggering their malware defenses. It would appear that Apple has not done a good job of communicating changes in camera support inherent in Big Sur.

All that said, a thorough reading of this entire discussion shows that the issue occurs on Macs that are not running a/v software, so this appears to be just one facet of a more complex issue that Apple still needs to address in its entirety.
