Camera not working in Big Sur

Hey Apple,

After updating to OS X Big Sur my camera has stopped working. This goes for every application, including FaceTime, Zoom, Teams etc.

I have tried rebooting to no avail.

Can you please help?

Regards,

Jacob

Does this help? From https://discussions.apple.com/thread/252040930?answerId=254102270022#254102270022 it says:

"I had the same issue, what I found was that my Virus Protection software "Kaspersky" had set the privacy setting to block the Webcam, changed it to Allow Webcam and now its ok. I didn't have this issue when using previous versions of Mac OS, for those that's having an issue it might be worth a look"

I find it very interesting that we apparently are several that seem to have experienced the same chain of events: updating to Big Sur - camera not working (at all).

I feel like I’ve tried everything. Talked to Apple support, very friendly, but couldn’t solve it and ended up saying it was an unrelated hardware failure. I ended up accepting that, since downgrading didn’t solve the problem. I am now on Big Sur 11.1, and the problem is still there. But again, VERY interesting that more people seem to experience the same thing.

I have also checked the system report, done the diagnostics when rebooting, reset SMC and PRAM, all to no avail. The system doesn’t detect a working camera.

I realise this post isn’t much help, but thought I’d clarify my status.

Cheers, Jacob

I updated to Big Sur 11.1 and now the mac thinks there is no camera installed. About this mac / System report / Hardware / Camera reports "No video capture devices were found". If I follow your Route 1, it shows the camera already ticked. This coincided with the Big Sur update. Either there is a problem with the updated OS or the update has somehow made the camera invisible to the OS. Could be a driver issue?

I'm having this same issue, (MacBook Pro, Mid-2014), I'm currently in the middle of an open case with a senior technician at Apple. We're going to be resetting and downgrading my laptop software and seeing if it's going to be something that requires a patch for the next Big Sur update. If it does turn out to be a Big Sur issue it will be reported to her engineering team so it can be flagged and investigated thoroughly and hopefully get resolved. With any luck, I'll be able to update with a solution on Sunday or be able to say it's being looked into.

Any update upon this from Apple?

So hopefully this will end up working, but I contacted apple support and after hours of trying everything (reseting, restarting, redownloading Big Sur, creating a guest account to see if it was due to secondary apps and nothing working as I shared screen with them), they are sending the report and recordings to engineers to try and fix the problem and patching it. I will get notified Monday if there is any progress and will let y'all know!

If I were you, I'd make an official complaint to Apple. Be polite but firm.

If you are in the UK, see here: https://www.complaintsdepartment.co.uk/apple-uk/

You can eMail them on contactus.uk@euro<dot>apple<dot>com

The sheer number of reports of this same issue does, in my opinion, warrant a proper solution or, at the very least, a free repair.

Guys, I'm giving up. I've tried everything suggested and been in contact with Apple Support several times.
They keep claiming it's a hardware issue and say that latent hardware issues can be triggered by an OS update.

It's an interesting concept.

It's like saying your car has five gears and, as you drive slowly, you never use gear five.

Gear five is faulty, but you don't know it as you don't use it.

Then one day a new type of petrol is introduced which promises better performance so you try it. It's so good that you are tempted to drive faster and you move into fifth gear. At which point your car's gearing system crashes and the car has to be repaired at the garage.

The petrol didn't break the gears, but if you hadn't used that petrol you wouldn't have used gear five, and all would have been ok.
