how do I delete items from my ICloud

My ICloud backup won't go through bc I don't have enough space on my ICloud. Am I able to delte items in ICloud?...or do I need to purchase my space?

See -- If you can't back up to iCloud or restore from iCloud backup failed - Apple Support.
