Internet Port On IMAC

Internet Port

My internet Port does not recognize my internet cable?? How can I fix this problem or find out why it will not recognize it. When I plug cable into port on computer is says no cable connected for internet. But with this same modem, I can pick up wireless network ok, and use it on computer. I would prefer to use the direct cable connection.

Avoid Crossover-Cables:

Some Ethernet cables are made to go from device-to-device (i.e. computer-to-computer). Those are known as crossover-cables.

Use a Strait-Through Cable:

The cables you need are strait-through cables. These go from you computer to your router. There are eight cables inside of it - each of which includes its own frequency. It is the cables inside of it that are probably loose.

Try a New Purchase:

So, purchase a new cable, and try this once more. Be certain it is a strait-through cable - not a crossover cable.

More on Crossover Cables:

Without Getting too Technical here...

I. Colors of a Crossover Cable:

Crossover cables have two ends. Typically, crossover cables are unique in color (yellow). But what stands out is the order of the colors of each internal, threaded cables, all clasped on the ends of the cable. Ultimately, the color of the “outside cable” (clad) is not standardized, whereas the color on the internal cables are standardized.

II. File Sharing Prompts:

You need to enable file sharing between the two. And you’d likely get a message prompting you to allow connection. So, if no prompts, then no worries there.

III. Plastic Tips:

As with a strait through cable, on each end of the the crossover cable, there is a plastic tip, and both ends are the same width. With more internal, threaded cables, they are a bit more wider than those on a telephone cable. The plastic ends have clasps, that click in to the port of the device, just like that of telephone cable.
