School requirements ipads

What if a low income family who had to use a school's iPad for elementary school education for a 10 year old child and the family could not afford the insurance on it and just barely afford the internet required for it but had to use the school's ipad anyway months later the ipad falls the screen is cracked if could not afford the insurance surely could not the repair or replacement of ipad so what is one to do ?
