After using the new vanish mode in the Facebook messenger app, it always says I have 1 new message.
If I go back and send a new vanish message to my friend, the badge disappears, but as soon as I get a new normal message, the badge is back and stuck
this might be a messenger issue and not iOS tho..

I reinstalled the app, that fixed it

Based on your post it sounds like you're having trouble with notifications using FaceBook Messenger. Is that right?
Have you tried toggling notifications for the app off, and then restarting the iPhone to help isolate? This can be done in Settings > Notifications. If so, have you checked for any application updates in the App Store? Take a look at all the steps listed in the article below. This includes reinstalling the app to test.
