My iMac is running OS X El Capitan 10.11.16 but I have no software update available to install. I can't download some apps as it says my operating system is too old ? (sorry I'm not very tech). I contacted apple and downloaded Mojave but it says this version is not working ?

depending on your model version you may not be able to install higher than high seirra or catalina
