Quicktime player is not recording my audio when i screen record

to record the mac's internal sound with quicktime you need additional software. i use a kext file from the retired soundflower app. the app no longer works but if you download the free kext file from this page it will do what you want to do. you will also need to set up a multi-output device in your audio MIDI setup utility. there are instructions on how to set it all up on the link i provided. one thing you should know is that the kext file is signed, but the installer is not, so you'll need to follow the instructions to the letter to install it. and just fyi, i downloaded and installed it while still on catalina, but the extension still works on big sur.

Using the instructions on the site, I tried this in Big Sur but got an error message that the installation failed. I then tried the Audio MIDI Setup to see if the Soundflower kext had installed, but it had not.

I checked the Rogue Amoeba website (originator of Soundflower) & found SoundSource for ~$40.

i should have added that if you have an M1 chipped mac, a different user had an issue where soundflower wouldn't work. if you don't have an M1 mac, you should read the article again. on the first try my installation also failed. i forget exactly how i did it. i think i needed to hold the control key while clicking the installer icon. i've had other users confirm that soundflower also works on their machines running big sur as well. if you can't get it going, there are other free options on the internet. i use soundflower with quick time because it's simple and it works good. if you DO have an M1 mac, keep following this thread and i'll report back here when the user in a different thread gets his M1 setup to work. he's currently investigating other apps for M1 compatibility.

I held the control key while clicking the installer icon.

Just tried it again & I got the got the Installation Failed message while the installer was validating the package.

The kext wasn't installed.

ok. after the first attempt, have you gone into SystemPreferences>Security&Privacy under the General tab and click the "Allow" button for soundflower or the developer (matt installs)? then after you "allow" it, you need to run the installer again. you haven't mentioned this, so i'm unsure that you have tried that step.

if you've already done so and still can't get soundflower to install, you may want to look into getting BlackHole Virtual Audio Driver. it' also free.

I did that but still got the installation failed.

The Blackhole Virtual Driver solved the issue for me.
