I have "solved" my problem. It seems the application I used to create these Tiff and PNG files adjusted the times associated with the photos in an unexpected way. The album was over 1000 photos in chronological order and I failed to spot the newly added photos as they were inserted in an unexpected order.

If a file format is not compatible with Photos for Mac, you would see an error message, when you import the photo. The most recently imported photos should alway appear at the bottom of the Imports album, independent of the capture date. But in Photos 6 it may take a while, until the photos will appear in Imports, i.e., if you are using iCloud Photos.

Thanks for your comments. As I hope it shows online, the only problem I was having was the unexpected position within the album of the files I was importing. I sorted the files in the album with oldest first and they showed up hours before expected. The files do not appear to have been correctly sorted because the sort order does not agree with what the times are indicated to be. I suspect but am not sure if this has arisen because when the original pictures were taken the camera was set to another time zone and I used Photos to adjust indicated times.

It helps, when we always display the date &time with the timezone. That makes it easier to compare times.

I have changed the System Preferences > Language & Region > Advanced > Times for the Medium format to include the time zone suffix. This way I can see easily in Photos, which time zone is used to compare the timestamp of a photo with other photos.

This is working since macOS 10.15 Catalina and described here: How to display the Date and Time Zone in the Info in Photos in Catalina

For example: The info for this photo is showing that Photos is incorrectly using the timezone of the Galapagos Islands (-5:00) for the time stamp of the photo, because the photo is tagged with GPS; showing it has been taken on the Galapagos Islands. My cameras are always kept on UTC, so I have to change only the time zone for the photo without changing the time.

Thanks - I've made the change you suggested and now time zone is reported. But the album is still not sorted in chronological agreement with the displayed times. Again I suspect that the picture file has multiple time fields - one with the time as originally recorded - and another with the displayed time as adjusted - and it is sorting according to different times than displayed. That is only a theory to explain the apparent failure of the sort to achieve an order of sorting that is correct relative to the displayed times. I still don't know assuredly what is going on and how to fix it. But I do like the display of time zone.

When you adjust the Date&Time in Photos, because the camera has been set to a different time zone, that Photos has picked, it is bit tricky.

  • First, you have to set the time zone by clicking the time zone strip. Set the "Closest City" to the correct city for the timezone you want. Now Photos will simply convert the displayed time to the selected time time zone, but the sorting will remain the same.
  • To correct the sorting, change also the time "Adjusted" to the time "Original". Both times should remain the same, if you just want to fix the wrong timezone. If you already changed the "Time adjusted" previously, but the sorting is still off, try to find a photo taken at the same time with a different camera, then set the hour of the "Time adjusted" to the correct time it should be.

The "Adjust Date&Time " can be done for all photos taken with the same camera at once, if you collect them in a smart album with the rule "Camera model is ...".

Thank you so much for amazingly responsive answers. The thing I do not understand is that the newly inserted photos into the album are displaying the correct time. If the sorting were operating on the displayed time then the photos that were chronologically closest together would appear just fine. But the sorting is causing my newly inserted photos to appear out of chronological order. So how do I get the sort to actually operate on the displayed time? I'm sorry if I am being a bit thick on this. The old noggin needs to be super charged!

I'm an experienced traveller who has been ALL over. Most of my photos are taken by a Nikon camera fitted with an excellent Solmeta geotagger. It ALWAYS records the correct time and location, even direction, of every photo based on satellite information which includes time relative to GMT. However, the time gets displayed according to the time zone setting of my Nikon. There are multiple fields for time on the Nikon picture file format. If I travel and initially forget to adjust for the new time zone on my Nikon, picture times end up being displayed out by whatever my time zone displacement is. So sometimes I have to adjust the times displayed in photos using the method of adjustment you described to me. I don't recall for sure what adjustments I have made years ago in this case. I have done this sort of thing for years. I am viewing the photos in the Apple photos program. I am viewing the pictures in the album with a screen full of distinct picture images supposedly displayed in chronological order except the order is not chronological as the displayed times on the photos are not properly ordered relative to the order of the photos. The displayed times are correct and in the same time zone as they should be. I can ALWAYS determine the correct time of any photo by getting into the guts of the Nikon photo format and check what my Solmeta recorded.

Are they displaying the correct time within the same timezone? Photos is sorting by the displayed capture time converted to the time zone. If one photo is showing 11:35:08 -05:00 and one photo 10:35:09 -04:00 the photo with 10:35:09 -04:00has been taken one minute after the other photo and will be sorted behind the other photo.

Where are you viewing the photos? In the "All Photos" album? Or an album you created yourself in Photos?
