Distortion during playback.

I am trying to figure out why I am getting distortion during playback of recorded tracks. I run Logic Pro X 10.5. with a Tapco Link.USB interface through 2 Yamaha HSM50 monitors.

I have read that if you change the sample rate in Logic this may solve the problem. The song I am listening to was recorded at 44.1khz. When I play it back I get distortion on the tracks. If I change the sample rate to 48khz, it plays back without distortion but at a faster (undesired) speed.

I have tried changing the buffer rate, still distorts.

Changing Sample Rate solves distortion problems? Where did you read that? Makes no sense at all.

Changing the Sample Rate of on an existing Project (in any DAW) is a NONO because this just means that the audio files are playing back (clocked) faster or slower. The result, as you already experienced, is a pitch and tempo change (unless you have Sample Rate Conversion applied to the files).

Your description doesn't make sense. First you say you get distortion on a "recorded track" (I assume you recorded a new Track in Logic), but then you say the "song you are listening to". Does that mean you imported a song, an existing audio file?

Nevertheless, whatever Sample Rate the audio files has (either recorded or imported) that should be the Sample Rate you should have the Logic Project set to.

Distortion due to Sample Rate mismatch makes no sense (unless a bad Sample Rate Conversion process).

Maybe explain your setup a little bit more to figure out where the distortion is coming from (I assume you checked the meters)

Hope that helps,

Thanks Edgar. To be clear the audio was newly recorded.

I saw a video troubleshooting a different audio interface (Focusrite Scarlett 2i2) fot similar issues, it mentions sample rate in that you want to make sure they match, as in the rate the audio was recorded at and where Logic is set for playback. That somehow a difference in rates could cause static or distort the audio.

My issue is mysterious because it comes and goes, later on in my session yesterday I was able to achieve distortion free playback by unplugging and replugging the usb back in.

Trying to figure out if its just a bad interface before buying something new.

This started earlier in year where I found out my USB 2.0 port on the Tapco had been damaged (pins bent/dislodged). I opened the unit and replaced the port. After this, there was no more distortion. Thought it was the port. Then it returned, every now again, mysteriously, so I replaced the USB cable and that seemed to fix it again. Now I am back to experiencing the distortion. I have also tried using different USB ports on the MBP. This entire time I thought it was a physical/technical ailment of the audio interface, but since it just appears, goes away for a while then reappears I am just unsure.

Thanks again.
