Messages notification badge not syncing across my devices

My iMessage notification badges are not syncing across my line of Apple Devices. Every time I read a message on my phone, it will not update the notification badge on my Mac, leaving me to think that I have new messages every time I open my Mac. Is there a fix for this issue or is it just a design flaw in MacOS?
