black screen in quicktime when connecting ipad to macbook

I am connecting my ipad to my mac by cable. When I start a new movie recording in quicktime and switch to the ipad, all I get to see in Quicktime is a black screen. Previously I could show the display of my ipad on my macbook. For some reason now I only get this black screen.

Hello fmeulen,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. It looks like your iPad is not mirroring your Mac's screen when using Quicktime, and we'd be happy to look into this with you.

Just to clarify, does your iPad mirror your Mac's screen when using applications other than Quicktime?

If you haven't already, let's try to restart both your iPad, and Mac:

Restart your iPad

Log out, sleep, wake, restart, or shut down your Mac

To get started, please check out the information in the following link:

Use your iPad as a second display for your Mac with Sidecar

We hope this information is useful. Kind regards.
