USB 3 to Lightning Adapter not working with my iPad

So yesterday, I purchased a USB 3 to Lightning adapter for $65 AUD from the Australian retailer JB Hi-Fi. The adapter I purchased is 100% genuine, and I even have the original box + receipt. The adapter worked fine with my iPhones (iPhone 11 Pro Max, iPhone 5s), but not my 8th generation iPad (running iOS 14.2). Whenever I plug it in with my lightning cable connected to the adapter, the iPad would not charge. The lightning cable I was using was the lightning to USB-C cable that came with my iPad. But when I plug the lightning cable in by itself, without the adapter, it would charge just fine. Can anyone help me? This is the 2nd time I’ve returned a USB 3 to Lightning adapter to JB Hi-Fi, and I doubt they would accept another return.
