Cannot progress past Home Button Haptic Screen in iPhone set-up following update to IOS 14.2

The top part of my iPhone 7 plus screen is unresponsive following a drop a few months ago. Despite this, the phone remained completely functional with the use of Reachability or rotation of the screen to landscape.

Unfortunately, following the successful update of my phone to IOS 14.2, I cannot get past ‘Home Button Haptic’ screen in setup.

The Continue button is in the unresponsive top right-hand corner and neither Reachability nor rotation work. The normal function of the Home button seems to be disabled.

Any ideas would be appreciated, as it is a perfectly good phone apart from this

Hello Caswell63 and welcome to Apple Support Communities. It appears you are having some difficulty with a damaged iPhone.

While the device may have operated for some time after the initial damage, the Home Button is part of the display assembly and it's not a surprise that it might stop working at some point after the initial damage which appears to be the case here. At this point, you'll need to look into repair options for your iPhone.

thank you for your advice, however I do not believe that the problem lies with a dysfunctional Home button.

- this button works fine for all screens up to the Home Haptic screen (eg passcode, update complete, Apple wallet, Apple analytics) on the many occasions when I have tried different options to control the phone remotely. It only fails to function on this single screen in set up.

- it would make logical sense for the Home button to have been programmed differently for this screen in the set up process as the purpose of this screen is to select the degree of pressure the individual user prefers when operating the button.

I also think it is too much of a coincidence for this to suddenly occur when the update was applied.

I accept that there is a problem with the sensitivity of the upper portion of the screen but this has not prevented me using the phone.

On December the 4th I successfully updated my iPhone to IOS 14.2

The usual set up screens appeared and I worked through them successfully until I arrived at the Home Button Haptic screen.

This screen requires you to tap on Continue at the top right-hand corner of the screen to progress. This is not possible, nor can you use Reachability or rotation to Landscape.

You do not seem to be able to bypass this step.

I am now effectively locked out of my phone, though I can receive calls from other people.

I can do a hard reset on the phone by pressing the Sleep/wake button and the volume down. This brings me back to the Hallo screen of setup.

I can use Reachability on the other setup screens. I assume that the Home button is reassigned in function for the Haptic Screen and if I could get past this the phone would be completely functional again.

Whilst on the Software Update Complete screen, I can bring up Accessibility Options by pressing the Home button once. (Is it possible to use these?)

I have tried to use QuickTime player to view the phone on my Mac (phone connected by USB/ lightning port) – this works, but I cannot control the phone using this display
