I just received my new iphone 12 pro yesterday and cannot figure out why the screen doesn't lock when I put it down, and screen goes dark.
My previous phone was the 6 plus, and I always had to unlock it with the finger print or password between usages.
In settings - displays - Auto Lock, I do have it set to 30 seconds.
Also in settings - Require Password Immediately is selected.
Not sure what else to do.
One just has to touch the screen and swipe up to access phone.

Indeed that was issue!
Facial rec is new to me so i assumed i had to hold it level to my face in order to work, but in fact, it was catching me from all sorts of low and off angles.
