Mail addresses

Where does macOS keep the address list for Mail? I have a huge number of obsolete email addresses that pop up whenever I start an email. I use both GMail and iCloud. These addresses do not coincide with the addresses appearing in Mail on my iPhone or iPad. I want to find this file(s) and edit it (or delete it).
