Hi, I have Apple TV 4th gen and have been using my iPhone 7 to adjust volume. Just received my iPhone SE and I am unable to have the volume work consistently. It worked this morning and two hours later isn’t working. Just a little confusing!
In order to use the iPhone for volume it requires one to use a receiver that supports HDMI CEC and Apple TV to be connected directly to it. If there is an issue it would come down to the implementation of the protocol from the receiver. Check for any firmware update, refer to manual for troubleshooting and contact the manufacturer if necessary.
I understand that it needs to be connected to the receiver, but what doesn’t make sense is that it worked today as well as last week with my old iPhone. Can you explain why it worked consistently with my iPhone 7 but now it works sometimes with my iPhone SE? I have a Bose receiver btw.

Don’t you just love technology! Most of the time it makes life easier and then it frustrates you..... It’s so odd, it works perfectly fine with the Apple TV remote. Thanks for your help, I’ll try to direct hook up to the receiver.

Yes, it can be sometimes. In this case it would come down to the fact that the physical remote uses IR for volume and the phone can only use HDMI CEC, and in order to control via CEC it needs the direct connection. Merry Christmas to you as well.
Unfortunately I can't, what I was trying to point out was that it comes down to the receiver so you would need to troubleshoot the receiver and ultimately contact Bose if you can't get it to work.
