Because of the small size of the Apple Pencil battery, if it is not charged on a regular basis, the battery can fail quite easily. Given its size and construction, the battery cannot be replaced in the Pencil, you would have to purchase a new one. I would be willing to bet the battery has failed, especially given you state you haven't used it in a couple of years. Since you mention your son's Pencil and iPad, I would see if you can pair your Pencil with his iPad. If it will not work, I would say it is the Pencil. You would need to replace it. If you do, remember the Pencil needs to be charged on a regular basis, so the battery retains some charge to prevent the battery from going completely flat and failing.

Hello again Squidgel,

Thanks for reaching back out to us. You mentioned earlier that the Apple Pencil does pair with the iPad. If this is correct, then you are able to see if and how much it's charged in the Battery widget on the iPad. Get started here:

Pair and charge Apple Pencil (1st generation) with iPad

The guidance you need is under "Charge your Apple Pencil (1st generation)". It also provides the steps to add widgets to the Home Screen on your iPad.

Have a great day!

I had just updated the software when I posed my initial question. I did disconnect and reconnect the Pencil, and it paired with the iPad. My problem is that the pencil doesn't write, in any program. Is there a way to see if it's charged? It's been on the charger (two different chargers) for several days, but there's no light or any way to tell for sure if it's charged.

I updated my iPad software (it didn't finish installing before, I hadn't realized). I connected the Pencil, paired it, the screen said welcome to Pencil and asked me to test write with Scribble. The pencil didn't write, and won't select anything. It doesn't show up in the Battery widget. I changed tips, to no avail.

My son's Pencil, also 1st generation, works perfectly with my iPad. His is for school though, so I can't use it : (

I "forgot the device" then paired it again. In Settings>Bluetooth, the Pencil showed as connected, but only for a second, then showed as disconnected almost immediately.

Any other ideas?

Yup,

You cannot store Apple Pencils for any prolonged period of time and NOT keep them charged up to some level.

If your Apple Pencil/s sat around unused or unopened and not kept charged up for more than a few weeks, or so, OR

LONGER, then the battery in your Apple Pencil may have failed and is dead and you will have to purchase another

brand new Apple Pencil or get, if still under warranty, a free replacement Pencil from Apple.

Sorry.

And it looks like some things about the Apple Pencil have NOT changed in the new version 2 model, either.

FYI and something Apple will never, EVER divulge to it potential iPad Pro/Apple Pencil customers/users unless the potential customer/user is smart enough to ask about,

Due to the “always on and active/standby” nature of the Apple Pencil and, also, due to its very tiny rechargeable Li-

ion battery ( smaller than the eraser head on a REAL wooden pencil ), the Apple Pencil needs to be constantly charged up to some significant charge level ALL THE TIME, even when not using the Pencil for prolonged periods of time.

The Apple Pencil needs to be kept charged to a minimum of 5-10% all the time.

If the Apple Pencil battery is allowed to drain down to 0% and allowed to stay in that flat condition for more than a few weeks, or so, OR EVEN LONGER, that very tiny little Li-ion battery is too small to keep at a 0% state for a long period of time and it will fail and the Apple Pencil will be dead and you may have to “pop” for another $99 Apple Pencil, once again!

Apple only has a one-year warranty on any Apple accessory items.

You need to keep your Apple Pencil charged all the time, even if it is only to 10%-15% charge. It must keep some charge level in that tiny Lithium-ion battery at all times!

Sorry and Best of Luck to You!
