iOS 14.2/14.3 battery drain bug!

Not sure you know anything about this, but my iPhone 8 battery randomly started to be really bad.

One day my battery was working great and randomly it’s draining battery at a super fast rate...

I didn’t download or change any settings. My settings are the best for battery saving...

I’m hoping it’s a weird software issue!

Know why this could be happening out of the blue?

UPDATE: I have since update to the iOS 14.3 RC/GM and my battery has been much better but the issue is still there not 100% fixed!

Hi!

Airplane mode does initially disable all connections (Wi-Fi, Cellular, Bluetooth) however all except Cellular can be separately re-enabled even if airplane mode stays active. Hence why I asked if your carrier supports Wi-Fi Calling.

Did you update to 14.4 already? Even though the drain bug on my device isn't gone, the overall battery performance though got better. And because I am connected to Wi-Fi 99.9% of the day, airplane mode with Wi-Fi calling works like a charm.

Being on airplane mode and completely offline (in case you do not have the Wi-Fi calling option) is not really a fix either, is it?

I only use and recommend airplane mode because Wi-Fi calling exists and is a possibility for many.

In any other instance, I advise you to plug in your phone however often you can until Apple hopefully fixes this, so you are not prematurely ruining you battery (if it drains entirely multiple times a day and you have to recharge it, it most definitely will put on many many cycles and makes it degrade even faster). But as you said, it is sitting on your desk most of the day waiting for a fix, it's alright ;) The battery draining like this (not only your device, but devices across the entire line-up) has to be a software bug which they should be able to patch up. Nobody knows what is taking them so long, and why they do not address this. It has made quite a bit of fuss already and they don't do anything. Maybe they are clueless as well, who knows

Lucky you, consider yourself a needle in a haystack because everyone is experiencing problems with battery life on 14.2/14.3.

I myself had to downgrade from 14.3 to 14.2 (which worked fine since the beginning on my iphone 11) cause my battery went from lasting two days to only a few hours. For all those who are experiencing this issue, grab 14.2 ipsw from.... you know where dot me and do the thing to correct the thing apple is doing with the thing that is controlling the other thing that powers up de device. :) they keep deleting my posts.

That looks like the battery info is incorrect/inaccurate. Try rebooting iPhone if you can see different percentage would show up. This won't fix the problem but at least you prove it's a battery info issue and not battery health issue. Besides this, some part of iOS is consuming lots of battery at times. This part also needs to be fixed.

@cyrille273, I never said I am working for Apple. I am a iOS/macOS/iPadOS/Windows/Linux software developer but not an Apple employee. You should read correctly.

That's helpful information. But by the same token, there are a lot of people with 7's running 14.2 or 14.3 with no problem. So logically speaking, it's not the iOS.

I'm not trying to be argumentative, but to help figure this out. Having other devices to use, would you be willing to do a factory reset on your 7 and see what happens on a factory stock device over 24 hours? If the battery still runs down over a short period, then we will have definitive proof that it is 14.3. Until somebody does that, it's all speculation and no one here is going to be able to help.

Its common for devices with the same model type, for example my 6s to have different hardware revisions during the manufacturing process. For example, my 6s has two possible A9 processor manufacturers., TSMC and Samsung. I'm sure there are other components in my phone that could vary over the production cycle of my phone. Also, there could be different revisions within the same chip manufacture for the same model chip. So to have one phone with the battery drain issue and the same model phone without is a possibility. Also as some mention, 3rd party apps could pose a problem as well but why wouldn't the battery monitor point out the app that is consuming the excess? Many of us place our phones in battery saver mode, close all apps, then wake up with 25% battery remaining in the morning and showing no app usage. Since nothing on my phone has changed and the battery usage started the very moment of the IOS 14 update, I'm convinced it is the IOS.

Well I was thinking of having my 6s battery changed and see if it might help with the battery nearly completely diminished over night since the 14.2 and then worse 14.3 update. But those who have done it dont see and improvement in the consumption rate so I'll wait for the next update. Lesson learned, do not update IOS unless you absolutely have to.

Essentially the same for me w/ the iPhone 12. However, my older iPhone 10 had essentially the same problem after updating to iOS 14.2 I'm convinced that the problem is iOS 14.x not the device but this needs to end. A $1000 phone should not be this unusable. The only way to get ANY use out of thr phone is to leave it in Low Power mode all the time.

I also have the (quite massive) battery problem, which is only remedied by turning on the sluggish "Low Power Mode". Then the battery lasts for one whole day (als before) - in any other case, it gets empty in two hours by just using the standard iOS apps. It seems to be an Apple iOS problem, as it startet with iOS 14 and still persists. Before that, everything was fine. My battery is still perfectly OK with 90% capacity and no sudden power losses (or at least it WAS before iOS 14.). Hopefully, Apple is working on a fix, as I don't want to ditch my iPhone SE just yet... You could always try filing a bug report via the "Product Feedback" form (https://www.apple.com/feedback/) - maybe they'll do something about it if enough persons complain.. Let's hope it's not a case of "planned software obsolency".
